3 Signs It’s Time for Your Loved Ones to Go to a Senior Care Home

Nothing is more frightening than getting a call that your elderly loved one, regardless of if they’re parents or grandparents, has taken a serious fall and injured themselves.

You want to start looking for a senior care home for them, but by that point, it’s already too late. You could have avoided this from the beginning if you had noticed the signs.

More than a million Americans already live in senior assisted living homes, and this number is expected to double by the year 2030. This means that you should be aware of the signs before something like this happens to your loved one.

Here are some of the signs to look out for that will show you it’s time to place your elderly loved one in a home.

1. Difficulty with Everyday Tasks

When everyday chores start to become difficult, that is one of the first signs it’s time for you to consider a home for your loved one. Tasks such as cleaning, house maintenance, and even gardening can prove to be too hard to complete.

If you are in their house and you see long-term filthiness, i.e. dishes in the sink for an extended period of time, dirty clothes or trash piling up, etc., this is a big indicator that either they no longer want to complete these tasks due to their difficulty or they simply forgot all about them.

2. Memory loss

It’s one thing to not want to complete a task because it is hard. It’s another to forget about it entirely. Unfortunately, about 50 percent of people aged 45 and older experience some kind of memory impairment.

If they begin to forget routine things, such as household tasks or more serious things like taking their medication, this can be cause for you to start looking for a home.

Look for things like unchecked mail, unkept or unpresentable looks, that would signify forgetfulness.

3. Social Isolation

Isolation is another crucial indicator. Although this may happen naturally due to friends passing away or moving into homes themselves, there can be ample opportunity for your loved one to slip into depression and it can negatively affect their overall health.

You can look for elderly care tips that might help them with this situation, but it would be best for them to live in a senior living home if this becomes a recurring issue.

Senior homes can allow them to live and interact with others which will mitigate this potentially dangerous turn. They can build new friendships and hopefully increase their mood.

Knowing the Time for a Senior Care Home

You nor your elderly loved one should have to go through a life-threatening scare because you failed to notice their markers. Just be aware of them and their non-verbals and you will be okay.

Give them the help they need and find them the senior care home that is best for them. They deserve peace, and you deserve peace of mind.
